U.S. and Turkey Share a Vision for a Stable and Peaceful Syria

U.S. and Turkey Share a Vision for a Stable and Peaceful Syria

May 22 2025

ARK News.. The United States and Turkey affirmed that they share a common vision for a stable Syria that lives in peace with itself and its neighbors.

According to a statement released following the U.S.-Turkey Working Group meeting in Washington on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, the American and Turkish delegations discussed their shared priorities in Syria, including the implementation of sanctions relief in line with the directive of the U.S. President, and enhancing joint efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

The statement noted that both the United States and Turkey recognize the importance of preserving Syria’s territorial integrity. A stable and unified Syria that does not serve as a safe haven for terrorist organizations will contribute to regional security and prosperity.

The statement stressed that the two countries share a vision of a peaceful Syria—at peace with itself and its neighbors—and reaffirmed their shared goal of creating the conditions necessary for millions of Syrian refugees to return to their homeland.

According to Turkey's Anadolu Agency, the meeting was co-chaired by Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Nuh Yilmaz and his American counterpart Christopher Landau, with the participation of the two countries' ambassadors, in a format involving institutions from both sides.

Masrour Barzani: Kurdistan Region–U.S. Ties Are Longstanding and Deep-Rooted

May 21 2025

ARK News.. Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has emphasized that relations between the Kurdistan Region and the United States have spanned many years, going far beyond the recently signed agreements with two American companies. He described the relationship as one based on deep historical and strategic foundations, which is why Washington continues to view the Region as a reliable ally.

Speaking to the media, Barzani stated:
“Unfortunately, some interpretations within Iraq regarding yesterday’s agreements have taken a different direction, but such reactions are completely unjustified.”

He affirmed that the actions taken by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) are fully in line with the constitutional rights granted to the Region under the Iraqi federal constitution.

“We will continue to uphold and implement all of our constitutional rights as clearly stated in the constitution,” Barzani asserted.

He also highlighted that these latest efforts were widely welcomed in the United States, as they aim to boost the energy sector and contribute to broader economic recovery.

Regarding the two agreements signed the previous day, Barzani noted that they “represent an opportunity not only for the people of the Kurdistan Region, but for all of Iraq as well.”

He concluded by saying: “Anyone who opposes these efforts is essentially part of a political agenda that seeks to prevent the Region from exercising its constitutional powers in developing the energy sector—whether in the Kurdistan Region or across Iraq.”

Ibrahim Biro: Kurds Cannot Continue Operating Outside the Framework of the Syrian

Ibrahim Biro: Kurds Cannot Continue Operating Outside the Framework of the Syrian

May 21 2025

ARK News.. A member of the External Relations Committee of the Kurdish National Council (KNC), Ibrahim Biro, stated that the PKK’s announcement to abandon armed struggle after decades of conflict marks a historic turning point across the regions affected by the group’s activities—particularly in Kurdish areas of Syria.

Speaking to BasNews, Biro said:

“The PKK’s decision to lay down its arms is a positive step, especially since there is no longer any justification for its affiliated structures in Syria to continue their militarized approach.”

He pointed out that weapons were used as a tool to impose de facto authority over the Kurdish people, leading to divisions, tensions, and even serious violations—including the recruitment and abduction of children, and monopolization of political, economic, and security decisions.

“These practices have harmed the Kurdish cause more than they have helped it,” Biro said. “They have damaged the image of that cause, both domestically and internationally.”

Biro added:

“Today, with the new administration in Damascus regaining its legitimacy on the regional, Arab, and international levels, it has become essential for Syrian Kurdish forces to actively engage in the national dialogue. Kurds cannot continue operating outside the political framework of the state or rely on military options.”

He emphasized that the abandonment of armed struggle, if accompanied by a mature political vision and a clear understanding of the new reality, could serve as a valuable opportunity to transition the Kurdish issue into the realm of politics.

“This would allow the Kurdish cause to move forward within a national political project that ensures the constitutional recognition of the rights of the Kurdish people,” he concluded.

Masrour Barzani: Kurdistan Regional Government Fully Committed to Energy Sector Development

May 21 2025

ARK News.. As part of his official visit to the United States, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani presided over the signing ceremony of two major energy agreements on the evening of Monday, May 19, 2025. The event took place at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce headquarters in Washington, D.C.

In his remarks during the ceremony, Prime Minister Barzani said:
"These two companies—HKN Energy and Western Zagros—which have been operating in the Kurdistan Region for many years, have played an influential and vital role in advancing the interests of the people of Kurdistan and Iraq as a whole. At the same time, they have achieved significant benefits for their companies and their country."

Barzani affirmed the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) full commitment to advancing the energy sector, noting that the government’s reform initiatives represent a key step toward ensuring round-the-clock electricity supply for all residents of the Kurdistan Region. “We also hope to contribute to providing electricity to other areas of Iraq,” he added.

In conclusion, the Prime Minister congratulated the people of Kurdistan and Iraq on what he described as a "major achievement," which he said would drive forward economic development across the Kurdistan Region.

He highlighted the deep historical friendship and strong ties between the Kurdistan Region and the United States, emphasizing longstanding cooperation in the fight against dictatorship and terrorism, and in the promotion of security and stability.

Barzani stressed that the shared goals between the Kurdistan Region and the U.S. go far beyond counter terrorism and military cooperation. “We believe that the horizons for economic development and energy investment can be broadened, deepened, and strengthened further,” he said.

The agreements were signed between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the American oil companies HKN Energy and Western Zagros, two leading firms in the energy sector.

The combined value of the two agreements is estimated in the tens of billions of dollars and aims to significantly develop the Kurdistan Region’s oil and energy sector, while boosting its overall economic infrastructure.

Faisal Youssef: Demands for Decentralization in Syria Do Not Mean Division

Faisal Youssef: Demands for Decentralization in Syria Do Not Mean Division

May 21 2025

ARK News.. Faisal Youssef, spokesperson for the Kurdish National Council in Syria (KNC), affirmed that calls by Syrians for decentralization and forms of democratic local governance in no way imply the division of the country. Instead, he said, such demands reflect a genuine will to build a democratic state founded on inclusive national partnership.

Speaking to ARK News, Youssef described the recent decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to lift economic sanctions on Syria as "a positive step that serves the interests of the entire Syrian population after long years of suffering."

Youssef noted that experience has shown the sanctions—despite their stated aim of targeting the former regime—have only exacerbated the suffering of ordinary Syrians and deepened the country’s economic crisis. He urged the new Syrian government to seize this opportunity to lay the foundations for good governance, transparency, and accountability, in order to address the daily hardships faced by citizens and resolve pressing economic, social, and political challenges.

“The path forward must not be limited to security and economic dimensions,” Youssef emphasized, “but should serve as an entry point for a comprehensive political process in line with the spirit and substance of UN Security Council Resolution 2254. Only then can Syrians rebuild their state on the basis of national partnership and secure the legitimate rights of all components of Syrian society, first and foremost the Kurdish people.”

Youssef stressed that the Kurdish National Council sees recent shifts in the U.S. position as an opportunity to foster a more flexible political climate that could enable serious dialogue among Syrian stakeholders—including Kurdish dialogue with the transitional government in Damascus.

He added: “No genuine political solution can be achieved without addressing the Kurdish issue in a just manner—through constitutional recognition of the Kurdish people’s rights within a decentralized Syria and ensuring their active participation in shaping the country’s future on the basis of equality and citizenship.”

Regarding efforts to form a joint Kurdish delegation to initiate dialogue with Damascus, Youssef confirmed: “In line with the unified Kurdish vision for Syria and the rights of the Kurdish people, the Kurdish National Council is working to form a joint delegation. We hope this will be finalized soon to support the success of upcoming talks with the transitional government.”

Commenting on President Ahmad al-Sharaa’s recent speech and his emphasis on Syria’s territorial integrity, Youssef reiterated that the Kurdish National Council remains committed to a united Syria. “We have never advocated for secession—past or present. However, we stress that unity cannot be sustained unless built on justice, equality, and open recognition of the rights of all components of the nation—chief among them the Kurdish people.”

Youssef concluded: “Calls for decentralization and democratic local governance do not equate to dividing the country. These are legitimate demands now being raised from across Syria and reflect a real desire to build a democratic state rooted in national partnership.”

He warned that dismissing these demands—or portraying them as a threat to national unity—only deepens societal rifts. The Kurdish National Council, he said, therefore calls for an inclusive national dialogue to pave the way for a democratic, pluralistic, and decentralized state that upholds the dignity and equal rights of all Syrians.

مسرور بارزاني: العلاقات بين إقليم كوردستان وأمريكا تمتد لسنوات طويلة

May 21 2025

May 21 2025
