Australia imposes sanctions on Iranians and Russians who violated human rights
ARK News… In a statement on Saturday, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced the imposition of sanctions on 13 individuals and two entities in Iran for "gross violations of human rights," in addition to Russian citizens.
The sanctions include the Iranian Basij forces and six individuals who participated in the bloody crackdown on protests following the death of the girl, Mahsa Amini, while in police custody.
"The Iranian regime's blatant and widespread indifference to the human rights of its own people has horrified Australians, and the perpetrators must be held accountable," Wong wrote in an opinion piece published in the Sydney Morning Herald today (Saturday) and reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
In addition to the human rights sanctions, targeted financial sanctions were also imposed on three Iranian individuals and a company involved in supplying drones to Russia for use against Ukraine.
The sanctions list includes a number of Russian citizens accused of poisoning Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.
The latter held a squad of the Russian Internal Intelligence Service (FSB) responsible for trying to poison him on the orders of President Vladimir Putin, he said.
