As 10 years have passed since the war in Syria, the European Union on Sunday reiterated that there is no solution in the country except through the political option. It stressed that sanctions against the Syrian regime continue, saying: “We will renew the sanctions against the Syrian regime next May.

In a statement on the occasion of commemorating the start of the Syrian revolution, the Union’s foreign and security policy representative added that the Syrian conflict is still far from a solution. He continued, "The regime and its allies must implement the Security Council resolutions.

In addition, it called on the Syrian regime to end the repression and release the detainees, stressing that the regime's brutal repression of the Syrian people and its failure to address the root causes of the uprising has led to the escalation and internationalization of the armed conflict.

It also stressed that accountability for all violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law is of utmost importance as a legal condition and a central element in achieving sustainable peace and true reconciliation in Syria.

Regarding the Syrian refugee crisis, it considered that it is the largest displacement crisis in the world, as there are 5.6 million registered refugees and 6.2 million internally displaced persons.
