The World Food Program warns of Syria's slide to the brink of starvation

Jun 15 2020

ARK News.. The World Food Program warned of Syria's slide to the brink of starvation, due to the economic collapse in the country, and the warning came from the CEO of the program, David Beasley, in an interview with the newspaper "The National".

"The continued deterioration of the situation in Syria may make the risk of starvation knock on the doors," Beasley said in his meeting with the newspaper, explaining that there is no point in sending money to the Syrians at the present time.

"If we send cash to the Syrians, they will not be able to buy anything with them, so we have to send food aid," Beasley added, as the numbers indicate an unprecedented rise in prices in Syria.

Beasley added that the price of the food basket for the World Food Program had risen by 16 percent in the last monthly census, adding that the expectations are already grim in Syria for 2020, after a decade of war that is "getting worse", he said.

"If the situation in Syria continues to deteriorate, food supplies will be disrupted in a country devastated by 10 years of war, and famine could knock on its door," Beasley said. He suggested replacing the sent money with food.

In his daily press conference, UN spokesman Stephan Dugrick affirmed that the United Nations is working to meet the critical humanitarian needs of more than 11 million people, all over Syria. In it, Dugrick stressed the need for more aid.

9.3 million people suffer from food insecurity in Syria, where the number of people in need increased by 1.4 million in just six months, while the WFP provides life-saving assistance to 4.5 million people per month.
