ARK News… President Masoud Barzani received the families of the martyrs and those wounded in the Kirkuk events, on Monday, September 18, 2023, at the Salahaddin resort in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region.

President Barzani condoled with the families of the martyrs and the wounded, and stressed that the blood of the martyrs would not be in vain, indicating that the perpetrators must receive their just punishment.

Barzani explained that the blood of these martyrs and the sound of their protests was a clear message to everyone that the Kurds are a living and conscious people and the oppression and injustice practiced against them in Kirkuk must end.

The president added that the continuation of the abnormal situation in Kirkuk does not mean that we will abandon its Kurdish identity, because it is a symbol for every Kurd.

Barzani stressed the need for Kirkuk to belong to everyone and to become an example of coexistence, brotherhood and unity. The problems that currently exist must not be solved through violence and self-imposition, but rather by resorting to the language of reason and logic.

Syrian Kurdistan: The expansion of popular protests and the Kurdish National Council calls for participation in them

Sep 19 2023

ARK News… The majority of the cities of Syrian Kurdistan and the areas under the control of the PYD administration and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are witnessing popular protests in rejection of the decision to raise the prices of diesel by more than 400%.

The administration of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) raised the prices of “subsidized diesel” from 525 Syrian pounds to 2,100 (equivalent to 15 cents to the US dollar), and free diesel from 1,700 Syrian pounds to 4,600 (30 cents to the US dollar).

The citizens affirmed, "The popular protests will continue until the PYD administration withdraws from the decision to raise diesel prices without taking into account their interests in general and the poor class in particular."

Commenting on the decision to raise diesel prices, Kurdish academic Khorshid Alika said, “This decision has adverse and negative consequences on the difficult economic and living conditions of citizens and will be negatively reflected in raising the prices of goods, food, transportation, and rising agricultural, industrial, and service production costs. The PYD administration must review its decision and reconsider its decision, and study it in all its aspects.

After raising the price of diesel fuel, the price of a package of tourist bread increased to 2,050 Syrian pounds, and the fare for private internal transportation in Qamishlo from 6,000 to 15,000 Syrian pounds.

The cities of "Girke Lage - Derik - Qamishlo - Kobani - Manbij" witnessed a state of popular unrest, and the people of these cities organized popular protests and closed shops and markets, demanding "a retraction of the decision to raise fuel prices and immediate intervention to stop the bleeding of living and economic deterioration."

For its part, the Kurdish National Council in Syria called for participation in the protest, today Tuesday at five in the evening, in front of the United Nations headquarters in the city of Qamishlo against the decision to raise fuel prices approved by the administration affiliated with the Democratic Union Party.

Afrin… Despite the violations, five Kurdish families return to a village in Afrin

Afrin… Despite the violations, five Kurdish families return to a village in Afrin

Sep 19 2023

ARK News… The return of displaced and refugee Kurdish families to their hometown of Afrin, its town and villages continues, the latest of which is the return of five Kurdish families, according to information received, on Monday, September 18, 2023.

A source from the village reported in exclusive statements to ARK that five families returned within three days to the village of Qastal Khidriya in the Bulbul town.

The source confirmed that the families returned from the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiya neighborhoods in Aleppo, in addition to the Al-Shahba camps in the Aleppo countryside.

A civilian in the Shiye town said a few days ago that three Kurdish families recently returned, one family came from Germany and two families from Turkey, to their hometowns in the center of the town and the villages of Alkana and Chaqala.

The past few months have witnessed the unprecedented return of displaced Kurdish families in Aleppo and those displaced in the Shahba camps, as well as refugees in Lebanon, Turkey and the Kurdistan Region.

After the Afrin war, more than 300,000 Kurds were displaced to the Al-Shahba camps, and they became victims of the PYD administration’s policy controlling the camps and the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods in Aleppo, which prevents the displaced from making their decision to return or head to other areas.

Despite the horrific violations taking place in Afrin, the displaced Kurds decided to return to their hometown, especially after more than five years had passed since they remained in the camps in the Aleppo countryside.

Politicians call for the need to return to limit demographic change in the region.

The Kurdish National Council condemns the decision to raise prices and appreciates the popular protests

The Kurdish National Council condemns the decision to raise prices and appreciates the popular protests

Sep 19 2023

ARK News… The General Secretariat of the Kurdish National Council published a statement calling on the masses to hold a sit-in, today Tuesday, September 19, 2023, in the city of Qamishlo, Syrian Kurdistan, in protest against the decision of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) administration to raise prices, and condemned in a statement “all the violations to which citizens are exposed, including the continued arrests of activists and members of the Kurdish National Council and targeting the people’s livelihood and starving them by various means and methods.”

The General Secretariat of the Council denounced “the decision to raise the price of diesel as one of the derivatives of the local oil supplier, the proceeds of which should be invested in supporting the basic materials for people’s lives instead of being a burden on them.”

It also appreciated "the popular protests that took place against this unjust decision, and as an expression of rejection, of these practices and policies against our people, and demanding “to stop it, respect people’s rights to a free and dignified life, and cancel the decision to raise the price of diesel.”

ARK received a copy of the statement that read:

In light of the worsening difficult living and economic conditions for all Syrians, the suffering of the people of all components in the areas administered by the administration of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) continues, and their space for hope is narrowed as a result of the policies pursued by this administration, which increase their burden. Thousands of young people who cling to their land have had the doors of formal education closed to them. It created harsh psychological and life conditions for them, and pressures and arrests continue to affect members and supporters of the Kurdish National Council, and the pace of taxes and royalties is rising in light of the stifling economic and living crisis. In the face of all of this, this administration raised the price of diesel fuel, which in turn leads to raising all the prices of goods and materials and wages. Transportation, which has a direct impact on people’s lives and adds other burdens to the citizen, in addition to the high costs it causes to farmers and agricultural production, especially in the bottlenecks it witnesses in providing diesel fuel and being forced them to search for it at a free price, not to mention the fear and anxiety it causes among people about their future, which drives them to search for ways of immigration and expatriation.

The Kurdish National Council, while condemning all the violations to which citizens are exposed, including the continued arrests of activists and members of the Kurdish National Council and targeting the people’s livelihood and starving them by various means and methods, denounces the decision to raise the price of diesel fuel as one of the derivatives of the local oil supplier, the proceeds of which must be invested in supporting the materials, which is essential to people's lives instead of being a burden on them.

At a time when the Kurdish National Council in Syria appreciates the popular protests that took place against this unjust decision, and as an expression of rejection of these practices and policies against our people, it demands an end to them and respect for people’s rights to a free and dignified life, and the cancellation of the decision to raise the price of diesel, and calls for all political parties, civil society organizations, and our people in all their activities, to a peaceful sit-in on Tuesday, the nineteenth of September, at five o’clock in the evening, in front of the United Nations headquarters in Qamishlo.
