Al-Sharaa and Guterres Discuss Ways to Strengthen Cooperation Between Syria and the United Nations

ARK News.. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa received United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and his accompanying delegation at the People's Palace in Damascus on Saturday, July 25, 2026.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between Syria and the United Nations in the humanitarian and development fields, as well as support for early recovery and reconstruction efforts. They also reaffirmed respect for Syria's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that the Syrian people have endured many years of hardship yet have not lost their resilience, creativity, innovation, or strong sense of belonging.

Guterres added that Syria is now in a phase of recovery and investment, creating opportunities for all, and is laying the foundations for a better future for all Syrians. He stressed that this path requires leadership, vision, and confidence so that every Syrian can see themselves in their country's future.

The UN chief further emphasized that no country can emerge from a devastating conflict and rebuild itself alone. He said the United Nations stands ready to support Syria in its determination to rebuild and looks forward to working with Syria and the international community to support the country's future and prosperity.
