Switzerland Updates Sanctions Regime Imposed on Syria

The Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs has announced amendments to the sanctions system imposed on Syria, including updates to the data of 18 individuals and 4 entities.

According to “Russia Today,” seven Syrian institutions have also been removed from the sanctions list, with the measures entering into force as of today.

The institutions removed from the sanctions list include the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Interior, the Air Force Intelligence Directorate, the General Intelligence Directorate, Military Intelligence, and Political Security, in addition to the Higher Institute for Applied Sciences and Technology.

Swiss authorities stated that this step comes within the framework of the periodic review of the sanctions system imposed on Syria, and in line with efforts to ease certain restrictions to support economic recovery and reconstruction.

They further clarified that the amendments do not constitute a full lifting of sanctions, as financial restrictions on several individuals and entities will remain in place, along with the continued ban on the supply of weapons and equipment that could be used for military purposes or in acts of repression.
