Girke Lage: Kurdistan Democratic Students and Youth Union – West Holds a Lecture on Transitional Justice
ARK News.. The Aliyan branch of the Kurdistan Democratic Students and Youth Union – West organized a lecture titled "Transitional Justice", held at the office of the Kurdistan Democratic Party – Syria in Girke Lage. The session was led by Radwan Sido, General Coordinator of the Legal Committee of the Kurdish National Council.
In his talk, Sido opened with an overview of the situation in Syria since the start of the revolution in 2011, highlighting the widespread violations, crimes, and repression faced by the Kurdish people and political movements.
He elaborated on the concept of transitional justice—its foundations, necessity, and purpose in the post-conflict phase—emphasizing that societies must not ignore past crimes and violations committed by all conflicting parties. “Only by confronting the truth with courage, through a mechanism of transitional justice, can we heal wounds, achieve lasting stability, and lay the foundation for a fair state governed by law and citizenship,” he said.
Sido explained that transitional justice must focus on bringing perpetrators to justice, particularly for crimes committed by the Syrian regime since 2011. He noted that this principle is included in a draft proposal being prepared for the upcoming Kurdish delegation's visit to Damascus. The proposal calls for the establishment of a specialized court for transitional justice in Syria, ensuring accountability, delivering justice, and compensating victims.
He also stressed that the Kurd must pay particular attention to the violations committed against them, including:
The denial of citizenship following the 1962 exceptional census,
The confiscation of Kurdish farmers' lands under the Arab Belt project,
The expulsion of Kurdish students from schools and universities.
