Nechirvan Barzani and Mohammed l-Hassan Discuss Several Key Issues

The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, and the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Iraq, Mohammed al-Hassan, exchanged views on the successful parties in the Kurdistan Region’s parliamentary elections and agreed on the urgent need to expedite the formation of the new regional government.

On Wednesday, February 5, 2025, President Barzani welcomed Mr. al-Hassan, and the two discussed the current situation in both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, as well as the potential areas of cooperation between the United Nations, Iraq, and the region.

Both officials stressed the importance of maintaining political stability in Iraq and agreed that strengthening ties between Baghdad and Erbil, along with resolving disputes through dialogue and mutual understanding, is essential.

They also shared their perspectives on the political parties that performed successfully in the recent parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region, concurring on the necessity of speeding up the formation of the new regional government.

In another segment of the meeting, the two discussed the role of the United Nations and humanitarian organizations, as well as the conditions of refugees and internally displaced persons in the Kurdistan Region.

In this regard, they reaffirmed the ongoing support of the United Nations for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region across various sectors and emphasized the importance of continued cooperation and coordination.
