President Nechirvan Barzani and McGurk discuss the latest developments in Syria and the Kurdish issue in it

During a meeting with His Excellency Mr. Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, Mr. Brett McGurk, Coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa Affairs at the White House, affirmed that the United States of America will continue its support for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, and can be relied upon to confront and defeat Da’esh once and for all. He also expressed his condolences to the families of the martyrs of the Peshmerga who were recently martyred in the face of ISIS.

In the meeting that took place on Monday, December 13, 2021, in Erbil, His Excellency President Nechirvan Barzani described the timing of Mr. McGurk’s visit to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region as important and stressed that affirming America’s continued commitment to supporting Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in conjunction with the change in the tasks of the American forces and the international coalition in Iraq is an important message.

In the meeting, which was attended by the two gentlemen, the American ambassador in Iraq and the American consul-general in Erbil, the issues of the Iraqi parliamentary elections and their results and expectations for the future of the political process in Iraq, talks between the Iraqi forces and parties were discussed, efforts to form the new federal government, the security, the military and economic situation of the country, ISIS attacks, cooperation, and coordination between the Peshmerga and the Iraqi army, Erbil-Baghdad relations, the Iraqi-American strategic dialogue and opportunities to strengthen relations between the two sides were discussed.

The views of the two sides agreed on the fact that ISIS is a real danger, and in order to confront and defeat it, Iraq still needs the continued support and aids of the international coalition, and they also saw the need for cooperation and coordination between the Iraqi forces and parties to be able to form a comprehensive government in the country that responds to the demands of Iraqi citizens and maintains security and stability.

The internal conditions of the Kurdistan Region, Iraq's relations with the countries of the region and the world, the situation in the region in general, the latest developments in Syria and the Kurdish issue in it, in addition to a set of issues of common interest to both sides, formed another focus of the meeting.
