ARK News.. The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Sunday announced a complete lockdown across the region amid a dramatic increase in COVID-19 infections, a statement said.

According to an order by the interior ministry, all traffic between provinces and towns will be banned from May 31, 11:59 pm, to June 6, 12:00 am, making it clear that any drivers would face legal actions in case of violating the lockdown.

However, it will not affect vehicles belonging to the security forces and medical teams.

No movement of pedestrians is also allowed from June 1, 6:00 pm, to June 6, 12:00 am.

During the six-day lockdown, operations at the government's offices will be suspended as well, while all religious sites will be closed, the statement added.

Except the pharmacies, all other marketplaces will also be closed down. The bakeries will be allowed to open from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm, being expected to deliver bread to the citizens.

The border crossings and the two airports in the Kurdistan Region will remain closed during the curfew.

This came only a few hours after the health ministry confirmed 101 new cases of coronavirus in the region, the highest daily number since the outbreak of the novel virus.
