ARK News.. The World Health Organization plans to allocate $ 35 million in a program to aid western Syria in tackling the spread of the Corona virus, including Idlib Governorate, where the last enclave of armed opposition is in the country.

The WHO Regional Director Mahmoud Dhaher said, on Friday, that the organization has launched a comprehensive program aimed at raising readiness and the ability to respond to the threat of the Coronavirus in 8 regions in northwestern Syria, which will be supervised by a team of 15 people.

Dhaher pointed out that the region suffers from a shortage of medical capabilities needed to confront the virus, as there are no isolated rooms for Corona patients and beds in the intensive care units and personal protection equipment as well as cadres.

He added: “In northwestern Syria, there are 306 working medical centers run by our 57 partners in the health field, and they have 203 artificial respirators in total, and the number of beds in intensive care units is 347 beds, including hospitals supported by Turkey. For every ten thousand people in northwestern Syria, there are only 8 medical personnel, which is well below the minimum international standard.

A spokesman for the World Health Organization told France Press last Monday that tests to detect the new Coronavirus will begin soon in areas outside the control of the Syrian regime in Idlib Governorate, amid fears that the epidemic will affect the overcrowded camps for the displaced.
