آرك نيوز.. قالت منظمة الأمم المتحدة للطفولة "يونيسف"، يوم الجمعة 14 تموز 2023، إن نحو 289 طفلاً فقدوا أو توفوا خلال محاولتهم عبور البحر المتوسط هذا العام، في طريقهم من شمال أفريقيا إلى أوروبا.
وأوضحت المنظمة الأممية في بيان أن هذا العدد يعادل وفاة أو اختفاء ما يقرب من 11 طفلاً أسبوعياً.
وصرحت كاثرين راسل، المديرة التنفيذية ليونيسف، في البيان قائلة، "يستقل الكثير من الأطفال قوارب في سواحل البحر المتوسط، بحثاً عن الأمان ولم شمل العائلة ومستقبل أكثر تفاؤلاً، ولكنهم يفقدون حياتهم أو يتم فقدانهم في الطريق".
وأضافت، "إن هذا يدل بشكل واضح على ضرورة بذل المزيد من الجهود لتوفير مسارات آمنة وقانونية للأطفال الذين يسعون للجوء، وتعزيز الجهود لإنقاذ الأرواح في البحر. وفي النهاية، يجب أن نعمل على معالجة الأسباب الجذرية التي تدفع الأطفال إلى المجازفة بحياتهم في المقام الأول".

وأحصى وصول نحو 11,600 طفل إلى سواحل إيطاليا منذ كانون الثاني 2023، قادمين من شمال أفريقيا، وتابعت المديرة التنفيذية: يغادر غالبية الأطفال ليبيا وتونس بعد أن يكملوا رحلات خطيرة قادمة من دول إفريقية والشرق الأوسط.

ودعت "يونيسف" الحكومات إلى توفير حماية أفضل للأطفال المعرضين للخطر في البحر وفي بلدان المنشأ والعبور والمقصد عن طريق:
