ARK News: Former President of Kurdistan Region Masoud Barzani received on Thursday a delegation from the US State Department in Erbil.

Barzani and Acting Assistant Secretary David Satterfield reviewed the latest security and political developments in the region, according to the readout of the meeting.

The US delegation included David Satterfield, acting US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, as well as US Charge d’Affaires to Baghdad, Joe Hood, and the military operations officer against General Powell Lakarima, as well as the consul in Erbil.

They also discussed the ties between Erbil and Baghdad, with the guests emphasizing that improving the relations would help both the governments of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

On Islamic State (IS), Barzani and Satterfield both agreed that, despite victory over IS on the battlefield, the jihadists group remains a threat to the Iraq and Syria and the whole region.

The statements made by officials came just hours before an explosion at a beautiful market in Sadr City announced (IS) responsibility for it later.

During the past two days, a US diplomatic delegation held meetings with Kurdish officials in Erbil after holding similar talks in Baghdad.

The US diplomatic delegation visited Masrour Barzani, Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council, earlier the day.

Masrour Barzani is nominated to take office as the prime minister of Kurdistan Region in the near future.
