15 Syrian Defense Ministry Personnel Killed in Weapons Depot Explosion Near Sarmada
ARK News.. Fifteen personnel from Syria’s Ministry of Defense were killed and 10 others injured, including civilians, in an explosion at a temporary weapons and war-remnants storage facility near the city of Sarmada in the northern Idlib countryside on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
The Ministry of Defense said in a statement that the facility was being used to temporarily collect weapons and remnants of war before they were transported elsewhere.
Specialized units, in coordination with the relevant authorities, immediately moved to secure the site and deal with the aftermath of the explosion.
The ministry said the competent authorities had launched an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. It also said it assumed full responsibility for the incident.
The initial toll was four killed and 10 injured before the number of fatalities later rose to 15, with the number of injured reaching 10.
The authorities have not yet announced the direct cause of the explosion. Rescue and emergency teams continued efforts to secure the site and recover victims amid the risk posed by further explosions and unexploded ordnance.
