Kurdish National Council Condemns Attack on Returnees to Sari Kaniye and Calls for Accountability

ARK News.. The Kurdish National Council in Syria condemned the attack on residents of Sari Kaniye returning to their city, holding the relevant authorities in the Syrian government responsible for protecting the returnees, securing their safety and property, and ensuring their return.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, the council’s General Secretariat condemned and denounced the attacks and practices that undermine citizens’ dignity and threaten civil peace, calling for a transparent investigation and accountability for those involved, as well as measures to prevent the recurrence of such attacks and violations.

The statement stressed that the return of displaced people is a fundamental right, describing it as a necessary step toward achieving national reconciliation and consolidating stability in Syria. It also emphasized the need to guarantee the safety of returnees and their property and ensure their secure return.

Statement Condemning and Denouncing the Attack on Residents of Sari Kaniye Returning to Their City

Since the displacement of the residents of Sari Kaniye in late 2019 as a result of the conflicts taking place across the country, which also affected their region, the Kurdish National Council in Syria has affirmed their right to a safe and dignified return to their homes in accordance with Resolution 2254 and with international guarantees, while safeguarding their rights and compensating them for damages.

With preparations for the residents’ return underway, the first group was scheduled to return on August 9. However, the return was met with attacks and insults by groups residing in the city who are not originally from the area, resulting in injuries and material damage.

The Council condemns these practices, which undermine citizens’ dignity and threaten civil peace, and holds the relevant government authorities responsible for protecting the returnees, ensuring their safety and property, and guaranteeing their return without any attacks.

The Council also stresses that protesting against such violations is a legitimate right when exercised peacefully, without undermining public institutions or national symbols that represent everyone. In this context, the Council calls for a transparent investigation, accountability for those involved, and measures to prevent the recurrence of such attacks and violations.

The Council renews its call for the completion of the residents’ return and for enabling them to reclaim their lives, rights, and lands, particularly with the agricultural season approaching.

The return of displaced people is a fundamental right and a necessary step toward achieving national reconciliation and consolidating stability in Syria.
