Kurdistan Democratic Party and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan Discuss Several Key Issues
ARK News.. Negotiating delegations from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) began their meeting in Erbil on Thursday, January 8, 2026.
According to Kurdistanis media sources, the talks are set to address the formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government, the reactivation of the Kurdistan Parliament, and the position of President of the Republic of Iraq.
The sources indicated that both parties are seeking to agree on a joint candidate for the presidency, whether from the KDP or the PUK, prompting intensive discussions on the matter.
They added that reaching an agreement on the formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government would pave the way for reactivating parliament and resolving the issue of the presidency of the republic.
This marks the first official meeting between the negotiating delegations of the two parties since the announcement of the results of the Iraqi parliamentary elections.
