Italy Provides €3 Million to Strengthen Disease Surveillance Systems in Syria

ARK News.. Italy has announced a new €3 million contribution to the World Health Organization (WHO) to enhance Syria’s capacity to detect, respond to, and prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

Alessandra Piermattei, Director of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation in Lebanon, said that cooperation with WHO in Syria has been one of the agency’s top priorities for years.

The Italian Agency for Development Cooperation stated that the funding aims to expand access to essential health services and strengthen vital preventive and monitoring capacities for Syria’s public health future.

According to WHO’s website, the contribution will be used to bolster disease surveillance systems, rehabilitate public health laboratories in Damascus and Daraa, and upgrade health information systems through digital transformation.

Andrea De Filippo, Head of the UN Office at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, affirmed that this funding reflects Italy’s commitment to supporting the Syrian people.
