For the Second Consecutive Day: General Strike in Predominantly Alawite Areas

Dec 10 2025

Ark News.. A Syrian human rights source reported that the general strike in predominantly Alawite areas continued for the second consecutive day, particularly in Latakia and its countryside, Jableh and its surrounding areas, Baniyas, Tartous, Safita, Dreikish, Sheikh Badr, as well as parts of Masyaf countryside and several neighborhoods in Homs and its outskirts. Residents widely adhered to the strike by shutting down shops and refraining from daily work activities.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, this popular movement comes in response to a call issued by Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal, head of the Higher Alawite Islamic Council, for a five-day strike. Circulating messages among residents carried phrases such as: “We are all with Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal,” “We stand with the strike; striking is a right and dignity,” and “Alawite blood is not cheap,” reflecting a clear collective stance in support of the call.

The strike, according to local accounts, aims to send a unified message expressing rising public frustration and demanding respect for rights and relief for residents. The movement continues with strong participation for the second day in a row.
