Washington: The current week will achieve a breakthrough in Syria or face a catastrophic failure

ARK News: The US State Department considered that this week may see a real breakthrough in the settlement of the Syrian crisis or vice versa which is a failure in the process.

The United States Special Envoy for Syria, James Jeffrey, said in a speech on Monday at the Atlantic Council in Washington: "We believe there is a chance to achieve a breakthrough with regard to the Constitutional Committee, which would meet in early January."

Jeffrey pointed out, however, that the lists of participants in the committee have not been agreed yet upon finally. "We have not reached this point yet," he said.

The US envoy continued explaining: "This week we are very close to achieving a breakthrough or a failure, and we will know on Thursday during a session of the Security Council of the United Nations involving the UN Special Envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura "

"The Russians and the Turks told us that the candidates for the committee fit the UN standards, but the opposition led by the Syrian negotiating body announced its rejection of the list at the moment, and this is a huge problem for de Mistura, who must submit a report to the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Jeffrey stressed however that "relative peace and tranquility settled across the entire territory of Syria," adding that "a good opportunity is now available for the success of diplomacy.
