
Second Anniversary of the Devastating February 6 Earthquake – Jinderes
ARK News.. Today, Thursday, February 6, marks the second anniversary of the catastrophic earthquake that struck northern Syria and southern Turkey. The earthquake, measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, was followed by a 7.6-magnitude aftershock and hundreds of tremors, resulting in the deaths of more than 59,000 people.
Jinderes, a town in Afrin, Syrian Kurdistan, was among the hardest-hit areas, with approximately 1,354 fatalities recorded, according to official statistics.
The destruction in Jinderes included 489 buildings completely collapsed, 2,529 partially damaged or structurally compromised buildings, and 24 destroyed or severely damaged schools.
A report by the Syria Response Coordination Team, which assessed the humanitarian situation in northwestern Syria following the earthquake, stated that 334,821 affected families had been registered, totaling 1,843,911 individuals.
According to the report, the earthquake displaced approximately 48,122 families, comprising 311,662 individuals—67% of whom were children, women, and people with special needs.
Regarding overall casualties, the team documented the deaths of 4,256 civilians and injuries to 11,774 others. Additionally, more than 2,240 bodies were transported from various border crossings with Turkey into Syria, while 67 individuals remain missing.
The report also highlighted that the humanitarian response rate across all aid sectors since the earthquake stood at 47.18%, while response efforts specifically targeting earthquake-affected individuals and additional relief projects reached 53.73%.
