For the First Time UN Investigation Committee Visits Syria
ARK News.. After years of being denied entry, members of the United Nations investigation committee on human rights violations in Syria have entered the country.
According to France Press Agency (AFP), Hanny Megally, a member of the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria, expressed hope for establishing good cooperation with the new Syrian authorities following his first visit to the country on Thursday, January 9, 2025.
This marks the first visit by the UN investigation committee to Syria, as access was denied during the rule of ousted President Bashar al-Assad, who was removed from power by Syrian opposition forces on December 8, 2024.
During his visit, Megally inspected detention centers and mass grave sites in and around Damascus. He also held talks with officials from the Ministries of Justice and Foreign Affairs.
In his remarks, the committee member stated
We aim to visit the sites we have documented to verify the information we have collected and address any gaps.
