ARK News: The former Arab and UN envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, blamed the Assad regime for the failure of the international mediation to find a political solution in Syria, noting out that the Assad regime looked indifferent to the heavy price being paid by the Syrian people.

In an interview with the Jeune Afrique magazine, the veteran Algerian diplomat said that the Assad regime’s disruption of the UN efforts stemmed from its conviction that it would eventually emerge victoriously. He pointed out that foreign countries were keen to protect their national interests and did not show any regard for the interests of the Syrian people.

Meanwhile, head of the Syrian Negotiations Commission, Nasr al-Hariri, said that Russia is to blame for the failure to convene the Constitutional Committee as it looks determined to end the United Nations sponsorship of the formation of the Committee.

“The Assad regime and its allies are seeking to derail the UN-sponsored political process and replace it with some form of dialogue under the umbrella of the regime leading to a so-called a process of national reconciliation that would ignore the crimes of the regime.

Hariri reaffirmed the Syrian opposition’s commitment to a political solution under the umbrella of the United Nations and to the implementation of its resolutions on Syria, adding that “derailing this process will be unacceptable to us.” He went on “Had there been a genuine international will, Russia and the Assad regime would not have been allowed to advance into the areas covered by the de-escalation zones agreement.”
