ARK News.. America has renewed it doesn’t support for holding any elections in Syria, and northern and eastern Syria, as the American assessment indicates that the necessary conditions for holding free, fair, transparent and inclusive elections have not been met.

The US State Department said on its page: "The US assessment indicates that the necessary conditions for holding free, fair, transparent and inclusive elections in Syria, including in the north and east of the country, have not been met."

The US State Department added: "We do not support the recent announcement issued by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria calling by the Supreme Elections Committee to begin preparations for the municipal elections."

The US State Department noted: "The United States has consistently expressed the need for any elections in Syria to be free, fair, transparent and inclusive, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254."

The State Department indicated: "The necessary conditions for holding similar elections in Syria, including in the north and east of the country, are not currently met."

On Thursday, September 5, 2024, the PYD administration announced that it had authorized the election commissions in the northeastern regions of Syria to work on preparing for the municipal elections, without specifying a time frame for them, after they had been postponed several times.

According to the decision of the High Elections Commission affiliated with the PYD administration, "each district can hold the elections at the time it deems appropriate according to its situation in coordination with it."

The elections were scheduled to be held on June 11, before the commission announced on June 6 that the date had been postponed to August, then postponed again without an official announcement.

In this context, the General Secretariat of the Kurdish National Council issued a statement after its regular meeting, on May 25, 2024, in which it considered that “the elections to be held will take place in a non-neutral environment and the results are not settled in a way that consolidates the authority and hegemony of the PYD, which is based on an ideological social contract.”

The issue of municipal elections in the “the PYD Administration” areas remains a subject of controversy and criticism, especially in light of the repeated postponements and international and local criticism regarding their transparency and legitimacy.
