OPCW: It is difficult to verify the destruction of the Syrian regime's chemical weapons program

ARK News.. The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) confirmed in its latest monthly report that there are still outstanding problems that hinder the full verification of the destruction of the Syrian regime's chemical weapons program.

According to the OPCW report, the Syrian regime has not yet provided sufficient explanations for finding traces of undeclared chemical warfare agents at previously declared sites.

The report, which covers the period from July 24 to August 23, 2024, added that the organization's Declaration Assessment Team (DAT) was able to detect traces of chemicals in samples collected in September 2020 and April 2023, raising concerns about the possibility of undeclared development and production of chemical weapons at those sites.

The report noted that despite 27 rounds of consultations with the "Syrian regime", 19 problems remain unresolved, hindering efforts to verify Syria's declarations regarding its chemical weapons program.

The organization added in its report that the Syrian regime refused to grant entry visas to all members of the international team, which led to the postponement of technical activities necessary to advance the investigations.
