Aug 17 2024

ARK News.. Protesters from various villages and towns in Suwayda Governorate, southern Syria, flocked to participate in the central demonstration in Al-Karama Square on Friday, marking the first anniversary of their peaceful movement.

Demonstrators from various components of Suwayda gathered in Al-Karama Square to demand freedom, political change, and the overthrow of the Syrian regime.

The demonstrators chanted slogans calling for the overthrow of the Syrian regime, the departure of its president, Bashar al-Assad, and the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2254.

The movement began in Al-Karama Square in the center of Suwayda city on August 17, 2023, after the regime raised the prices of petroleum products through a general strike, quickly turning into a broad popular movement against the regime.

The peaceful movement maintained on its demonstrations and demands to overthrow the regime, implement international resolutions on Syria, and achieve a political transition in the country in accordance with Resolution 2254.

Events in Suwayda have escalated since last March, when the youth of the movement called for a general strike, accompanied by storming the headquarters of the "Eastern Branch of the Baath Party", and tearing up pictures of the regime's president and his father, Hafez al-Assad.

Suwayda demonstrations were subjected to gunfire by regime forces on two occasions; the first was in November, and the second was in late February, when the first person killed in the protests was Jawad al-Barouki.

Suwayda's peaceful movement has increased recently, and resulted in a campaign to boycott the People's Assembly elections, which culminated in the suspension of elections in many villages and towns and preventing them from taking place in other towns.
