Bakr Ali, head of the Association of Refugees Returning from Europe in the Kurdistan Region, said in a press conference that the boat, which was carrying about 61 refugees, set off on Thursday, June 13, 2024, from the Turkish coast of Bodrum, heading towards the Italian coast.

According to Bakr, the drowning accident occurred, on the night (Sunday - Monday, June 16 and 17, 2024, off the Italian coast due to the boat colliding with high sea waves. 11 people on the boat were rescued, and 60 people are still missing.

For his part, activist Ranj Bashdari said that the boat was carrying 70 migrants, about 60 of whom were missing, and more than 35 of the missing people were Kurds.
