Khoshnaw: The Gwer refinery fire caused material losses estimated at millions of US dollars

ARK News… The Governor of Erbil revealed the material losses caused by the oil refinery fire in Gwer, and new details about the cause of the fire in the refinery, which continued for hours.

Omid Khoshnaw, Governor of Erbil, said in a press conference that a fire broke out at 8:35 pm on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, due to a spark that emitted from one of the generators on board a vehicle, which led to a fire breaking out in one of the warehouses that contained 500 tons of materials, which are flammable materials in the Gwer oil refinery.

Khoshnaw added that civil defence teams and all security and service departments were mobilized to the scene of the accident, and they worked with great effort to prevent the fire from expanding, but due to the accompanying gases and flammable materials, the fire moved to the second warehouse.

The Governor of Erbil pointed out that there were no casualties, but that 4 Civil Defence vehicles and several transport vehicles were burned, 3 workers suffered burns, and 10 Civil Defence cadres suffered suffocations, all of whom were taken to the hospital.

Khoshnaw added: The fire caused material losses estimated at 8 million US dollars as a preliminary estimate.
