Gulf Cooperation calls for support for the political solution in Syria
ARK News… The Gulf Cooperation Council expressed its desire to resume the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, stressing its support for United Nations efforts to reach a political solution in Syria, in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2254.
This came in a statement issued by the Ministerial Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council at its 159th session, held in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.
The Ministerial Council affirmed its firm positions towards preserving the territorial integrity of Syria, respecting its independence and sovereignty over its territories, rejecting regional interference in its internal affairs, and supporting the efforts of the United Nations to reach a political solution in Syria in line with Security Council Resolution No. 2254.
The Council stressed supporting the efforts of its Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, supporting efforts to care for Syrian refugees and displaced persons, working for their voluntary and safe return to Syria, in accordance with international standards, and rejecting any attempts to bring about demographic changes in Syria.
It also urged support for the efforts of the Arab Ministerial Liaison Committee on the Syrian Crisis, which stressed the importance of settling the “Syrian crisis” and addressing its political, security and humanitarian consequences, in light of the commitments contained in the Amman Statement of May 1, 2023.
