United Nations: More than 7 million people are displaced in Syria

ARK News… In a presentation of the situation in Syria, the United Nations said that humanitarian needs are rising unabated, and that the escalation of violence and violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law in 2023 has led to more displacement and suffering.

"Syria remains a protection crisis. Children are still being killed, women and girls still fear for their safety, and 7.2 million Syrians are still displaced, many of them living in overcrowded camps," she added.

“The effects of economic decline and lack of livelihood opportunities further expose women and girls to the risk of exploitation, sexual abuse and other forms of gender-based violence in trying to access food and employment opportunities,” the report noted.

The report stresses that the multifaceted crisis in Syria creates ongoing cycles of vulnerability, disproportionately affecting people most in need, including individuals with disabilities. People are deprived of basic services, making them more vulnerable and putting pressure on social cohesion.

The UN report pointed out that without urgent and sustainable funding, basic services such as water, sanitation, health care, electricity, and education will continue to deteriorate, pushing more people into urgent need, and increasing the risk of resorting to negative coping mechanisms.
