Pedersen: The Constitutional Committee alone will not solve the Syrian crisis

ARK News… The UN Special Envoy to Syria confirmed that the Constitutional Committee alone will not solve the crisis, but rather will help find a common base among the parties participating in it.

This came in a speech during a seminar entitled “The Path to Stability in Syria” on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomatic Forum in southern Turkey.

Pedersen pointed out that Syria is not witnessing any progress towards a solution, and a solution cannot be reached through one party alone, and the opposition, the state and the government must come together to find common ground.

The UN envoy stressed the need to also involve the active parties in this solution, especially Turkey, the United States, Iran and Russia, and to evaluate and analyze well the reasons that led to the outbreak of the Syrian revolution.

He said: “To begin the process of direct settlement in Syria, we now need several things, most notably calm in the Middle East, intensifying humanitarian support, and activating the work of the Constitutional Committee.”

Pedersen added: “The work of the Constitutional Committee with the participation of all parties within the country is an important element in the potential settlement process. However, the committee itself will not resolve the crisis, but it will help the parties find a common base.”
