European Parliament: Al-Assad is personally responsible for the killing and torture of civilians and the destruction of the country

ARL News… The majority of members of the European Parliament voted, with 428 votes, against 35 votes against, on a resolution that strengthens democracy efforts and supports the aspirations of the Syrian people.

The vote came after the presentation of a report containing recommendations regarding the situation in Syria to the European Council, the Commission, and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign, Political and Security Affairs, in which he stressed that there is no normalization with Assad and no return of refugees without a political settlement.

The report, prepared by the Rapporteur of the European Union Foreign Affairs Committee, Nathalie Loiseau, stated that Syria “remains the scene of a forgotten conflict in the region.”

The recommendations stressed that "there can be no peace without justice, no return of refugees without a political settlement, and no normalization of the European Union's relations with the Syrian regime without major changes."

The report added, "Al-Assad is personally responsible for the deaths of half a million civilians, the destruction of the country, the displacement of the majority of the population, and the torture and forced disappearance of more than 100,000 people."

He explained that the European Union Foreign Affairs Committee opposes any normalization of relations with the Syrian regime if it does not duly implement UN Security Council Resolution 2254.

The report also stressed that combating impunity in Syria is “a precondition for any future solution to the ongoing crisis, and it is also a moral and political necessity for Europe and the international community.”

The European Parliament's report and recommendations called on the Union and its member states to continue supporting initiatives aimed at bringing the leaders of the Syrian regime to justice, calling on the international community to urgently increase its humanitarian aid to the 15.3 million Syrians who depend on it daily.
