Frontex: More than 100,000 Syrians crossed into European Union countries during the past year
ARK News… In its report, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) documented the illegal crossing of more than 100,000 Syrians into European Union countries during the year 2023.
The report recorded about 380,000 cases of illegal crossing into European Union countries during the past year, an increase of 17% over the year 2022, which is the highest level since 2016.
Syrians topped the number of asylum seekers and migrants arriving via the Western Balkan and Eastern Mediterranean routes, while they came third on the Western Mediterranean and Eastern European border routes, as well as in the number of arrivals to Britain via the English Channel.
The number of unaccompanied minors arriving in the European Union illegally in 2023 reached more than 20,000, an increase of 28% over 2022.
“These figures show the evolving challenges we face in managing the EU’s external borders,” said Frontex Executive Director Hans Leijens.
“We are committed to ensuring the security and safety of EU borders, and it is equally important to address the humanitarian aspects of migration, “These numbers do not just represent statistics; they represent real people.”
