The European Commission announces reaching an agreement on the immigration system
ARK News… The European Parliament and the European Union member states have reached an agreement on a broad reform of the migration and asylum system, at the end of long negotiations, according to what was announced by Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas.
European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson praised what she described as a "historic moment," adding: "We did it. We have just reached a political agreement on the Migration and Asylum Pact."
The Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union said that "a political agreement has been reached on the five files of the new Charter on Migration and Asylum."
This charter, which was presented by the European Commission in September 2020, represents a new attempt to reformulate European regulations, after a previous attempt in 2016 failed in the wake of the refugee crisis.
The goal is to finally adopt a set of texts before the European elections scheduled to be held in June 2024, noting that the issue of immigration is at the forefront of the political debate in several European countries, against the backdrop of the rise of far-right or populist parties.
This reform, which includes a series of texts, provides for enhanced monitoring of the operations of migrant delegations to the European Union and the establishment of closed centers near the borders to return those whose applications for asylum are rejected more quickly, as well as a mandatory solidarity mechanism between member countries to assist countries facing great pressure.
This political agreement must still be formally approved by both the Council (member states) and the European Parliament.
