ARK News… In a statement the Syrian Journalists Association, on Thursday, August 17, 2023, condemned the kidnapping of journalist Barzan Hussein by PYD militants, calling for his immediate release.

The following is the text of the statement of the Syrian Journalists Association:

An armed group of General Security affiliated with the Democratic Union Party (PYD) detained the journalist and member of the Syrian Journalists Association, Barzan Hussein Liyani, in the town of Ma’bada in Al-Hasaka Governorate, on the evening of Tuesday, August 18, 2023.

According to the information obtained by the Syrian Journalists Association, from sources close to the colleague Barzan Liyani, a masked group of 6 armed persons from the General Security Service raided the workplace of the colleague Barzan in the town of Ma'bada, and assaulted his son and another member of his family by beating and cursing. He was handcuffed and his head covered, and taken to an unknown destination. His place of detention is still unknown as of the date of publishing this statement.

The Syrian Journalists Association condemns the arbitrary detention of journalist Barzan Liyani, knowing that it is the third time that he has been detained on the grounds of his media work by members of the (Democratic) Union Party in northeastern Syria.

The League, calling for the immediate release of colleague Barzan Hussein, and expressing its full solidarity with his family; At the same time, it appeals to all journalists, media institutions and bodies, and human rights organizations in northeastern Syria in particular and Syria in general to exert pressure for his release, to preserve freedom of the press and to protect all journalists.
