ARK News... The two Democratic representatives in the US Congress, Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, have proposed a bill urging the United States to support international efforts to hold the Syrian regime accountable for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Syria.

In a statement, the two representatives said that regional powers have sought in recent months to get rid of Assad's heinous crimes and welcome him back to the international arena, adding that the Assad regime has committed some of the worst atrocities in the twenty-first century.

The two MPs noted that given the sheer number and scale of atrocities committed during the Syrian civil war, it is clear that an international justice mechanism is necessary.

Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib said, "Having international laws to protect civilians in times of war and affirm universal human rights is all well and good, but these agreements are meaningless if they are not implemented."

Tlaib added that holding war criminals, such as Assad and his followers, accountable for their crimes against humanity is critical to ensuring others do not repeat their actions, stressing that the international community's continued failure to do so is unacceptable, and the United States must act.

For her part, Representative Ilhan Omar said, "Millions of lives have been lost, families have been torn apart, and children have been left without parents because of the crimes of Assad, ISIS and the foreign powers that have cruelly used Syria as a battleground for their proxy wars."

Omar stressed that our basic humanity and international law require that we establish a justice mechanism to hold all those responsible for war crimes accountable, starting with Assad.
