Russia vetoes the extension of the aid entry mechanism into Syria
ARK New… Russia vetoed the Security Council, on Tuesday, against the decision to extend the mechanism for entering humanitarian aid into Syria.
The Russian delegate to the Security Council said that the mechanism for bringing aid across the border into Syria is a "provocation and a play," as he put it.
The delegate added that the problem lies in the content of the decision to extend the aid and not the time period for it, pointing out that a new draft resolution will be presented regarding the extension of aid to Syria.
Diplomatic sources confirmed before the start of the meeting that Russia had informed the members of the Security Council of its refusal to renew the mechanism for entering cross-border aid for 12 months, after the vote on two draft resolutions for the extension was postponed yesterday because an agreement was not reached.
Russia adheres to its project to renew cross-border aid for 6 months and from the Bab al-Hawa crossing only, while the Swiss-Brazilian draft resolution calls for renewing the mandate for a year.
