ARK News… Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced May 14 as the date for holding parliamentary and presidential elections.

Erdogan, who intends to run for a new term, said this during a youth conference in the northwestern province of Bursa on Saturday and released a video clip of the conference on Sunday.

"I thank God that we are able to walk with you our honorable youth who will vote for the first time in the elections that will be held on May 14," the president said.

He added that he would formally call the elections on March 10, after which Turkey's Supreme Electoral Council would prepare for the vote.

If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote, a second round will be held on May 28.

Erdogan, who has held all four of the country's offices since 2003, faces his toughest election yet as the Turkish economy suffers from soaring inflation.

The opposition coalition, made up of six parties, has yet to field a presidential candidate.

Under the new system, presidential and parliamentary elections are held on the same day.
