A Solution to Kurdish Question Can Help Middle East Stability: Kurdistan President

ARK News: Peaceful dialogue is needed to address the Kurdish question, which would ultimately help the stability in the Middle East, said Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani.

“The region is tired of wars and conflicts, it is time for peaceful solutions. It is time for a consensus in the region,” said Barzani while delivering a keynote speech at the Middle East Peace and Stability Forum 2019 held at the American University of Kurdistan, Duhok.

Barzani explained that the geopolitics transgressions after World War I led to a crisis in which Kurds and many other nations across the Middle East were left with no future.

Commenting on the current situation in the region, Barzani pointed out that the Arab Spring was another turning point that limited the role of some major states in Middle East affairs.

“Therefore, the superpowers increased their interferences, which led to further conflicts via proxies,” the Kurdish president said.

On terrorism, which is a constant threat to the Middle East, Barzani said that there are various factors fanning the fire of terror— lack of a culture of tolerance and peaceful coexistence, sectarian conflicts, and no plan to conduct political, economic, cultural, educational, and social reforms to name a few.

The Kurdish president emphasized that the source of the ongoing crisis in Iraq is the fact that the political factions and illegitimate armed groups are higher than the Constitution and the law.

On Islamic State (IS), Barzani said a misunderstanding about the end of the terrorist organization after its territorial defeat has brought about a dangerous situation. According to the Kurdistan Region president, IS is not defeated yet and the international Coalition is required to continue its battle with the same commitment as before.

While it is committed to peaceful coexistence and helping those who escape war and violence, the Kurdistan Region itself has been avoiding conflicts between regional actors, Barzani added. “The region [Middle East] cannot bear further conflicts. A political solution [to the conflicts in the Middle East] would serve the whole world.”
