Rights Group: 1,864 Civilians Killed Across Syria in 2019

ARK News: The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) said that it registered the deaths of 1,864 civilians, including six media workers as well as 21 medical workers and civil defense volunteers in the first half of 2019.

In a report released on Monday, the Network said that the victims included 468 children and 285 women. Of those, 891 civilians, including 211 children and 136 women, were killed in attacks by the Assad regime. The victims also included 159 people who were killed under torture.

According to the report, the Russian forces killed 149 civilians, including 34 children and 21 women. Hardline militant groups killed 107 civilians, including 82 civilians who were killed by ISIS and 25 others who were killed by Hay’ at Tahrir al-Sham.

The report indicated that 99 civilians, including 33 children and 10 women were killed by the PYD militia. Airstrikes by the international anti-ISIS coalition killed 64 civilians, including 20 children and 17 women. At least 540 civilians, including 149 children and 93 women were killed by other groups.

The victims included 15 medical workers, 11 of whom were killed by the Assad regime. Of those, five were killed in June.

The monitoring group said that six civil defense volunteers were killed in the reporting period, one of whom was killed by regime forces, another one by unidentified groups, and four by the Russian forces. Two civil defense volunteers were killed by the Russian forces.

According to the report 347 civilians, including 91 children and 39 women, were killed across Syria in June.

The report indicated that 159 people were killed under torture in the first half of 2019, 142 of whom were killed by the Assad regime. Hay’ at Tahrir al-Sham killed three people while the PYD militia killed seven others. Four others were killed by other groups.

The Network also said that it documented 59 massacres across Syria in the first half of 2019, 23 of which were committed by regime forces, eight by the Russian forces, six by the PYD militia, three by the international coalition forces and 19 by other groups.

The Network called on the UN Security Council to take additional measures to UN resolution 2254 as it stressed the need to refer Syria to the International Criminal Court and hold all those involved to account, including the Russian regime.
