May 10 2025

U.S. Extends National Emergency on Syria for Another Year

U.S. Extends National Emergency on Syria for Another Year

May 10 2025

ARK News.. The United States has extended the national emergency related to Syria for an additional year, confirming that the measure will remain in effect beyond May 11, 2025, in accordance with the U.S. National Emergencies Act.

In an official notice published in the Federal Register, the White House announced that President Donald Trump had formally notified Congress of the decision to extend the state of emergency concerning Syria. The extension is based on Executive Order 13338, originally issued on May 11, 2004, and will remain in force as stipulated by U.S. law.

In his notification, President Trump stated that “the ongoing structural weaknesses in Syrian governance, the regime’s inability to control the use of chemical weapons, and its failure to combat terrorist organizations continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.”

He emphasized that “these unusual and extraordinary circumstances necessitate the continuation of the national emergency beyond its legally scheduled termination date, in accordance with the National Emergencies Act.”

The U.S. administration also stressed that the extension remains subject to ongoing review, noting that future Syrian government actions and policies will be evaluated to determine whether the emergency should be terminated or further extended.

The original emergency declaration was imposed under the administration of President George W. Bush in 2004, pursuant to the “Syria Accountability and Lebanese Sovereignty Restoration Act” of 2003 and the “International Emergency Economic Powers Act.”

At the time, the emergency measures were introduced in response to allegations that the Syrian government (under the Assad regime) supported terrorism, occupied Lebanon, sought weapons of mass destruction, and obstructed U.S. and international efforts in Iraq.

Tammy Bruce: No Shift in Washington’s Position on Syria

May 09 2025

ARK News.. The United States has affirmed that the waiver allowing Syria to receive a Qatari grant to fund public sector salaries does not signal any change in Washington’s stance toward Damascus.

Speaking at the State Department’s daily press briefing, spokesperson Tammy Bruce clarified: “The United States has had a long-standing waiver mechanism in place to facilitate assistance that contributes to the stabilization of Syria.”

She explained that this existing framework “enabled Qatar to provide support for workers’ salaries without the need for a new waiver or additional approval.”

Bruce further emphasized that “any assistance delivered to Syria under this mechanism must be aimed at supporting the country’s stability. This, however, does not reflect a shift in the U.S. position on Syria.”

The State Department spokesperson reiterated that the situation in Syria remains under constant observation and ongoing engagement. “We address every development seriously, whether it signals a setback — which we do not support, as I’ve stated — or indicates movement in a direction we do support,” she concluded.

First Kurdish-Language University to Open in Germany in 2026

First Kurdish-Language University to Open in Germany in 2026

May 09 2025

ARK News.. Germany is set to host the first Kurdish-language university in Europe, with its opening scheduled for 2026—a landmark development described as a historic step for Kurds living outside the geographical boundaries of Kurdistan. The initiative aims to establish a new academic model rooted in the Kurdish language on European soil.

According to a statement released by the project’s organizers, preparations are already underway. These include assembling specialized teams, securing the necessary budget, and developing a solid educational infrastructure. The university is expected to officially launch operations in 2026, pending completion of administrative and regulatory procedures.

Kurdish will be the primary language of instruction, offered in both of its main dialects—"Kurmancî” and Sorani—while German and English will serve as supporting languages. Initial academic programs will focus on Kurdish language and literature, social sciences, and engineering.

One of the long-term goals of the project is to develop a unified academic Kurdish language that bridges the Kurmancî and Sorani dialects, thereby contributing to the advancement of higher education in Kurdish beyond the homeland.

In this context, Dr. Younes Bahram, president of the German-Kurdish Forum (Deutsch-Kurdisches-Forum e.V.), emphasized that the initiative is not merely an academic endeavor but represents a significant cultural shift for the Kurdish community in Europe.
