European Union: It is not fair to accuse us after providing aid to Syria

Feb 13 2023

ARK News… The European Union's envoy to Syria, Dan Stoinescu, on Sunday, said that it is not entirely fair to accuse the Union of not providing enough aid to the Syrians in the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck areas in Syria and Turkey last week.

Stoinescu, head of the European Union delegation, added in written statements to Reuters that it is completely unfair to accuse us of not providing assistance when in fact we have been doing so continuously for more than ten years and even more during the earthquake crisis.

UN and international aid did not arrive in Turkey in preparation for its entry into Syria until last Friday, that is, 5 days after the devastating earthquake occurred, at a time when the region is suffering from an acute humanitarian crisis due to Russia obstructing the entry of aid through the Bab al-Hawa crossing before the Security Council agreed to extend the mechanism. Entry of international aid.

United Nations: More than 5 million people have been displaced in Syria as a result of the devastating earthquake

Feb 13 2023

ARK News… The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has expressed its fear that the devastating earthquake will cause the displacement of more than five million people in Syria, which has been suffering from a bloody conflict for nearly 12 years.

The UNHCR representative in Syria, Sivanka Dhanapala, said in a press conference held at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva: It is possible that approximately 5.3 million people in Syria will be displaced as a result of the earthquake that struck the country along with Turkey at the weekend.

Dhanapala explained that the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is speeding up the delivery of aid to the severely affected areas in Syria. UNHCR places the greatest emphasis on the areas of shelter and relief materials, in order to ensure that there are adequate facilities in the collective centers where the displaced have taken refuge, as well as tents, plastic sheets, thermal blankets, winter clothes, and so on.

He added that the UNHCR concluded - according to a preliminary estimate - that 5.37 million people affected by the earthquake will need shelter assistance throughout Syria, "and this is a huge number and affects a population group that is already suffering from massive displacement."

Rescuing a child in the bosom of her deceased sister in the city of Jenderes

Feb 13 2023

ARK News… A video clip circulated by social media users documented the moment a baby girl was rescued while she was in the lap of her sister, who passed away to protect her sister in the city of Jenderes, north of Aleppo, as a result of the earthquake that struck southern Turkey and northern Syria at dawn last Monday.

The Syrian Civil Defense published the video clip on its Facebook account and commented on it: "Her infant sister sacrificed herself... Incredible moments to save a surviving child who was in her sister's lap."

The child, who was less than a year old, appeared in the circulated video as she was lying under rubble, and the body of her sister, who was trying to protect her, appeared, while stones and dirt were seen above their bodies. After removing the rubble, the child, who was breathing with difficulty, was pulled out and appeared to have a wound on her head.

This comes at a time when the chances of finding more survivors under the rubble are dwindling, as the survival rate of the living there drops to 6% on the fifth day after the occurrence of this type of disaster.

The death toll in the earthquake in Turkey and Syria exceeded 26,000, in addition to about 88,000 wounded. The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said that the energy emitted from this earthquake - which had a magnitude of 7.7 - was equivalent to 500 atomic bombs, while hundreds of people were rescued after staying for long hours under the rubble. Including infants.

Search operations continue under the rubble of destroyed buildings in the stricken city of Jenderes, north of Aleppo. Until Saturday, the Syrian Civil Defense teams documented the recovery of 515 bodies and more than 830 injured people from under the rubble of destroyed buildings in the city, while more than 2,167 deaths were recorded as the search operations continued to recover bodies. The deceased is in several places in the countryside of Idlib and Aleppo, in very difficult conditions, working under the rubble of destroyed buildings.

Activists on social media circulated a video clip of an infant who did not exceed one year of age, who remained under the rubble for 128 hours, alive without eating or drinking, and he was seen in the video sucking the gloves of the rescuer due to hunger before he was taken to a hospital to be placed in the nursery.
