Britain: We are working to restore aid access for 12 months to Syria without restrictions
ARK News… Britain announced that it is working to restore the arrival of humanitarian aid through the Bab al-Hawa crossing into Syria for a period of 12 months "without restrictions", stressing that it is not possible to rely on the Syrian regime's announcement to allow the entry of aid.
The British Ambassador to the United Nations, Barbara Woodward, said in a tweet via "Twitter" yesterday, August 10, 2023, that since the Russian veto last July, no aid truck has entered northwest Syria through Bab al-Hawa, noting that the announcement of the head of the Syrian regime " It means aid may start coming in, but NGOs and the Syrian people cannot count on one man who can change his mind."
Ambassador Woodward confirmed that Britain was working closely with the UN and NGOs to restore full aid access, noting that the UN Secretary-General and aid workers "have been clear that the borders must be open for at least 12 months, without arbitrary restrictions."
She noted that since 2014, the Security Council has ensured aid access and gold standard monitoring in Bab al-Hawa to stop aid misuse.
"Working with partners, we plan to take this (decision to extend aid access) back to the Security Council this month," the British diplomat added.

The United Nations expresses concern over the return of Syrian asylum seekers to Lebanon by Cyprus
ARK News… On Friday, August 11, 2023, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) expressed its concern after Cyprus returned 109 Syrian asylum seekers to Lebanon without investigating their need for legal protection.
The asylum seekers, who were returned under the escort of the Cyprus police, arrived in Cyprus on three separate boats between 29 July and 2 August.
The UNHCR office in Cyprus confirmed that deportations and transfers between countries "without legal and procedural guarantees for persons who may need international protection" contravene international and European law.
It noted that returning asylum-seekers could expose them to return to a country where they would face persecution, torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment and irreparable harm.

ARK News… A Kurdish young man from the city of Kobani in Syrian Kurdistan revealed secrets related to the PKK tunnels in the city of “Şengal”, and the abuse, torture and injustice that young minors are subjected to at the hands of the PKK staff in “Şengal”.
In an exclusive interview with Radio Rebaz, a young man, who preferred not to be named for security reasons, said that a large number of smugglers who supervise the smuggling of citizens from Syrian Kurdistan to the Kurdistan Region have a direct relationship with PKK leaders in “Şengal”, where they hand over citizens who wish to come to the region Kurdistan for the PKK in “Şengal”.
The Kurdish young man said, "PKK officials in Şengal force citizens who were transferred to Şengal by smugglers in coordination with the PKK, to work for free for months, and take away their identity papers and communication equipment from them in order to cut off their relationship with the outside world, and any citizen who opposes the injustice he is exposed to is threatened imprisonment for more than 4 months in prisons that lack the most basic necessities of life.
The Kurdish youth added: "There are kidnapped children under the age of 15, working in digging tunnels in Shingal, especially in the mountainous region and Bari region of Shingal. They shed tears every day, longing for their families, but all means of communication with the outside world are cut off from them."

Syria Response Coordinators calls for preventing the regime from controlling aid
ARK News… The Syria Response Coordinators Team said that a full month has elapsed since the end of the mandate for the entry of humanitarian aid across the border into Syria through the Bab al-Hawa crossing, which led to the suspension of the entry of 600 UN trucks, and an increase in humanitarian needs in northwestern Syria, calling for preventing the Syrian regime from controlling the entry of humanitarian aid.
The team said in a statement, on Friday, that since the end of the UN mandate issued by the UN Security Council for the entry of humanitarian aid across the border until today, it has entered through the three border crossings with Turkey: "Bab Al-Salama crossing: 163 trucks - Bab Al-Hawa crossing: 0 trucks - Al-Ra’i crossing: 0 truck".
He added that, stopping the entry of humanitarian aid through the Bab al-Hawa crossing, caused the halt of the entry of the equivalent of 600 international trucks during the aforementioned month, most of which were foodstuffs and flour, according to the previously established plans, as the amount of humanitarian aid through the three crossings, before the end of the mandate a full month, reached 1001 trucks.
The statement indicated that the interruption of humanitarian aid through the Bab al-Hawa crossing led to an increase in humanitarian needs in northwestern Syria by an average of 9.8 percent, for various sectors, compared to the previous month, and the percentage is expected to increase exponentially if the aid continues to stop.
The Syria Response Coordinators Team said that, "in light of the current circumstances, and the insistence of the United Nations to move forward with its understanding with the Syrian regime on the aid entry mechanism, we call for activating one of the following solutions to prevent the Syrian regime from controlling the aid entry operations":
- The return of humanitarian organizations operating in the region to before Resolution 2165/2014 by working outside the scope of the authorization mechanism.
- Transferring funding for United Nations agencies to international non-governmental organizations that distribute support to local entities (civil society organizations, associations, etc.).
- Any member state of the UN Security Council can call for an extraordinary meeting of the United Nations General Assembly and vote on the international resolution for the entry of humanitarian aid across borders, outside the scope of the Security Council, and thus ensuring that the veto is not used.
- Establishing a humanitarian fund for Syria, instead of the United Nations humanitarian fund, and establishing major coordination blocs distributed over areas of Syria outside the control of the Syrian regime.
