Barzani on Kurdistan Uprising Anniversary: Unity Key to Success

ARK News: Kurdish prominent leader and former president of Kurdistan Region, Masoud Barzani, reiterated that unity among Kurds is the key to success over suppressive regimes as it has been proven throughout modern history.

Barzani released on Tuesday a message to mark the 28th anniversary of Kurdistan uprising against the Baath regime back in 1991.

“March is the month of success and also tragedies for the people of Kurdistan. Most of the successes and turning points happened in the month of March. It is the month of the uprising, making sacrifices and reviving hope for the people of Kurdistan,” reads Barzani’s message.

Barzani reminded that the 1991 uprising was a clear message to the entire world that the Kurds will not accept being oppressed.

“If Kurdistan is united, overcoming oppression and occupation is always guaranteed,” Barzani highlighted.

The Kurdish leader also underscored the Kurdish struggle that forced the Iraqi government in 1970 in this month when the Iraqi government acknowledged part of the rights of Kurds before it broke the agreement itself.

“In the month of March, we also commemorate the martyrs of Halabja [chemical attack]. Halabja is a deep wound for our nation and it shows the brutality of our enemies. Halabja is the voice of Kurds’ innocence in the past century, and the whole humanity is responsible for the crime against the Kurdish people.”

Barzani also highlighted March as a significant month in the Kurdish calendar as it also marks the beginning of Nawroz, the Kurdish New year which starts on 21st March.

“The achievements, the developments as well as the strong position of Kurdistan Region now is the result of the sacrifices that our martyrs made,” Barzani concluded.
