Lavrov emphasizes the need for an agreement between Turkey and the Syrian regime on the establishment of the safe zone
ARK News: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed that Turkey should negotiate on the issue of establishing a safe area in northern Syria with the authorities of the country and not with Russia.
Lavrov said in this context, during a joint press conference with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bu Rita, following their talks in Rabat : "With regard to ongoing discussions on the issue of the buffer zone, the safe area, this cannot be the subject of agreements between Russia and Turkey, it is necessary to be the subject of the agreement with the participation of the Syrian government”.
Lavrov explained that "in the end, there is a clear need to restore the Syrian government's control over the entire territory of the country, including the area that is going to talk about."
Lavrov continued stressing: "I am sure that this step will represent the best step and the best solution in general the issues that still remain in this region. "
He also added noting: "There must be the least possible degree of external interference, this is what we proceed from it in the ongoing work within the framework of the process of Astana, and in February, a new meeting will be held in Astana with the participation of the three Guarantor States (Russia, Turkey and Iran), representatives of the Syrian Government and the opposition, as well as observers from the United Nations and Jordan, I think all these issues will be worked out there. "
In a related context, Lavrov expressed the hope that the Syrian Constitutional Committee will hold its first meeting as soon as possible.
