Erbil and Sulaimani airports suspend flights to and from Iran

ARK News.. Iranian airline Mahan Air announced on Friday, Sep. 25, 2026, the cancellation of its scheduled flights to Erbil International Airport and Sulaymaniyah International Airport in the Kurdistan Region after being informed that the flights would not be permitted to operate. Meanwhile, Najaf International Airport issued a decision to completely suspend all flights to and from Iran until further notice.

According to Kurdistan24, Sarssenk Mamondi, Mahan Air’s director in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, said: “A flight was scheduled to operate today, Friday, from Tehran to Erbil and back, but we were informed last night that the flight would not be permitted.” He added that “the company’s flight to the city of Sulaimani was also canceled for today.”

Mahan Air operates three round-trip flights per week to the Kurdistan Region, with flights to Erbil on Tuesdays and Fridays and to Sulaimani on Fridays.

Separately, Najaf International Airport sent an official urgent letter to the managers of stations and companies operating at the airport, stating that, “based on official directives issued by the relevant authorities, it has been decided to suspend all incoming and outgoing flights between Najaf Airport and the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

The letter indicated that the decision took effect at 2:00 a.m. on Friday and will remain in force until further notice.
