President Barzani Praises France’s Role in Protecting the Kurdistan Region and Supporting the Peshmerga
ARK News.. Kurdistan Democratic Party President Masoud Barzani discussed the latest developments in the region with a delegation from the French Senate, praising France’s role in protecting the Kurdistan Region and supporting the Peshmerga.
President Barzani received the French delegation on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, in Pirmam. The delegation included Remy Feraud, a senator representing Paris, and Olivier Paccaud, a senator representing Oise.
The meeting was also attended by Emmanuel Minoun, the French Consul General in Erbil. During the meeting, the visiting delegation praised President Barzani’s historic role in the liberation struggle of the people of Kurdistan, his efforts to build the Region’s institutions, and his leadership of the Peshmerga Forces in the fight against ISIS.
The delegation also commended President Barzani’s efforts to consolidate the foundations of stability and coexistence in Kurdistan, Iraq, and the wider region. The delegation further highlighted the deep-rooted and multidimensional historical, political, cultural, and popular ties between France and the Kurdistan Region, noting that France, both its government and people, has consistently respected the struggle and sacrifices of the people of Kurdistan and their commitment to coexistence and democracy.
President Barzani warmly welcomed the delegation and reviewed the history of relations between France and the people of Kurdistan at various stages, particularly during the September Revolution and the uprising. He also highlighted France’s efforts to secure the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 688 and protect the Kurdistan Region, as well as its support for the Peshmerga during the war against terrorism.
He also referred to visits to the Kurdistan Region by former French President François Hollande and President Emmanuel Macron, as well as the naming of a street in Paris after the Peshmerga. President Barzani said these historical milestones demonstrate the strong bonds of partnership and close friendship between the Kurdish and French peoples.
The meeting also addressed the political situation and latest developments in the region. President Barzani stressed that the Kurdistan Region has never been part of the tensions and wars in the region but rather has been part of efforts to find solutions.
Regarding Iraq, President Barzani reaffirmed the Kurdistan Region’s continued support for the Iraqi prime minister in implementing the Constitution and the principles of partnership, balance, and consensus, while preserving state institutions and the foundations of stability.
