Kurdish MPs Raise Kurdish-Language Education in Syrian People’s Assembly

Kurdish members of the Syrian People’s Assembly, Fasla Youssef and Ridwan Sido, stressed the importance of establishing a clear and formal educational framework for teaching the Kurdish language within Syria’s education system, as well as developing a mechanism to recognize previous years of study for students who received their education in Kurdish.

During a People’s Assembly session on Monday, September 14, 2026, several issues related to education in Kurdish areas were raised during a hearing with Education Minister Mohammed Abdulrahman Turko. Youssef, representing Hasaka, and Sido, representing Qamishli, addressed the issues of the Kurdish language and curriculum.

Youssef called for ensuring Kurdish students’ right to receive education in their mother tongue, emphasizing the need for a formal and clearly defined framework for Kurdish-language education rather than temporary measures that do not reflect the educational realities of Kurdish areas.

Sido, meanwhile, focused on the situation of students who had studied in Kurdish under the Autonomous Administration’s education system in previous years and now face difficulties as they transition to the government curriculum.

He also called for a mechanism to recognize their previous years of study and allow them to continue their education without losing an academic year or having to start over.
