Nafi’e Abdullah: High Prices and Weak Purchasing Power Are Burdening Residents in Syrian Kurdistan

ARK News.. A leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party–Syria (KDP-S) said that high prices and weak purchasing power are placing a heavy burden on residents of cities and towns across Syrian Kurdistan.

Speaking to ARK News, Abdullah, a member of the KDP-S Central Committee, said: “The people of Syrian Kurdistan continue to suffer from high living costs due to the dramatic rise in prices, low incomes and the severe economic crisis, in addition to fluctuations in the dollar exchange rate and the scarcity of the new currency, which are also contributing to the rising cost of living.”

The KDP-S official explained that “people’s suffering is not caused by a single problem, but by a combination of accumulated crises, foremost among them weak purchasing power and poverty.” He noted that “incomes have failed to keep pace with the prices of food, fuel and rents, making it a major burden for many families to secure basic necessities.”

Abdullah added that “the electricity and fuel crises affect various aspects of daily life, including water supplies, communications, roads, agriculture and industry,” at a time when fuel shortages and high prices have sparked protests in the region.

He pointed out that “water is one of the most serious problems facing the region, as a result of scarce water resources, poor services, administrative corruption and damaged infrastructure.”
