Nechirvan Barzani: Resolving the Issues of Syria’s Kurds Requires Understanding with Damascus

ARK News.. Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani stressed the importance of building balanced and stable relations with Syria, supporting the country’s territorial integrity, and protecting the rights of all its components within the state, saying that resolving the issues of Syria’s Kurds should be achieved through partnership and understanding with Damascus.

In an interview with Al Sharqiya TV on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, Nechirvan Barzani said the Kurdistan Region was ready to help bridge differences between Damascus and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) within the framework of a united Syria. He said relations between Damascus and the SDF were progressing well, noting that Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa was “serious about addressing this issue within a united Syria.”

“President Sharaa and his team have a clear vision that they are working on to move Syria forward.

The Syrian people have helped us greatly, and it is important to us that the Syria of the future guarantees the rights of all its components,” Barzani said, reaffirming the Kurdistan Region’s support for Syria’s political process.

Barzani explained that following the fall of the Assad regime, the Kurdistan Region told Syrian Kurds that they should engage with Damascus and raise the Syrian flag in their areas, stressing that the Region does not interfere in determining the political model for Kurds in Syria.

Regarding the Kurdistan Region’s role in Syrian Kurdish affairs, Barzani said the model established in the Kurdistan Region cannot be applied to Syria because of the different circumstances and geography of the country, emphasizing that the Region does not interfere in their internal affairs.

He reiterated the Kurdistan Region’s support for an agreement among Syrians and for guaranteeing the rights of all components in the Syrian Constitution.
